چکیده

Wind turbines frequently operate under situations of pronounced flow inclinations, such as in complex terrain. In the present work the performance and rotor thrust of downwind and upwind turbines in upward and downward flow inclinations are experimentally investigated. In an upward flow inclination of +13°, downwind turbines are shown to have a 29% larger power output than a corresponding upwind turbine, whereas the relative increase in rotor thrust is only 9%. Furthermore, it is also shown that the performance of downwind turbines is less sensitive to changes in the flow inclination, as the upstream nacelle on downwind turbines beneficially redirects and accelerates the flow around the nacelle into the

Data Driven Modelling of the Dynamic Wake between Two Wind Turbines

Wind turbines in a wind farm, influence each other through the wind flow. Downwind turbines are in the wake of upwind turbines and the wind speed experienced at downwind turbines is hence a function of the wind speeds at upwind turbines but also the momentum extracted from the wind by the upwind turbine. This paper establishes flow models relating the wind speeds at turbines in a farm. So far, ...

Optimal Torque Control of PMSG-based Stand-Alone Wind Turbine with Energy Storage System

In this paper optimal torque control (OTC) of stand-alone variable-speed small-scale wind turbine equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous generator and a switch- mode rectifier is presented. It is shown that with OTC method in standalone configuration, power coefficient could be reached to its maximum possible value, i.e. 0.48. An appropriate control algorithm based on turbine characterist...

Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Aerodynamics: Three-Dimensional, Unsteady, and Separated Flow Influences

Surface pressure data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s “Unsteady Aerodynamics Experiment” were analyzed to characterize the impact of threedimensionality, unsteadiness, and flow separation effects observed to occur on downwind horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT). Surface pressure and strain gage data were collected from two rectangular planform blades with S809 airfoil crosssect...

System Identification of a Wind Turbine Array

Individual wind turbines, whether stand alone or in a wind farms, typically operate to maximize their own production without considering the impact of wake effects on nearby turbines. Investigation into wind turbine interaction within a wind farm has the potential to increase total power and reduce structural loads by properly coordinating the individual turbines that comprise the wind farm. To...

Amorphing downwind-aligned rotor concept based on a 13-MW wind turbine

To alleviate the mass-scaling issues associated with conventional upwind rotors of extreme-scale wind turbines (≥10MW), a morphing downwind-aligned rotor (MoDaR) concept is proposed herein. The concept employs a downwind rotor with blades whose elements are stiff (no intentional flexibility) but with hub-joints that can be unlocked to allow for momentfree downwind alignment. Aligning the combin...
